Folic acid helps in preventing anemia and it is essential for both children and grown up to produce RBC (Red Blood Cells). Folic acid is important for women during and after pregnancy. Folic acid prevents major birth defects of baby's brain and spine. This defect caused by folic acid in children is called as spina bifida. It also helps in preventing other diseases in new born babies like certain heart defects and limb malformation. Increased incidence of miscarriage is also due to low levels of this folic acid. A folic acid rich food helps in decreasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Cancer is mainly due to DNA damage and it is possible for folic acid to prevent this damage because it helps in DNA and RNA synthesis. Consuming at least 5 fruits and vegetable rich in folic acid daily has been shown to decrease cancer. Fruits and vegetables consuming also helps in anti-carcinogenic effect. Folic acid also reduces breast cancer. Research conducted at Johns Hopkins Children's Center also shows that it is also used to suppress allergic effects. It is also used to suppress the effects of asthma too. A low folic acid level also causes some short-term memory loss problems.

All these uses makes folic acid very important ingredient in our daily diet. Folic acid is non-toxic and excess of it does not cause any problem. However daily intake of 100 to 1000 mgms is good for health.
