BERSIA GRAZING RESERVE

GRIK, PERAK, MALAYSIA

Introduction

The Bersia Grazing Reserve which is run by farmers of Kampung Bersia offers facilities for an exciting experience to live in traditional rugged farmers " pondok " surrounded by green tropical virgin jungle, cattle grazing reserve and the dammed-up Sg. Perak. The relatively unknown and untraversed area of Grik with its serene surroundings such as tropical rain forests, rivers, numerous salk licks, fish spawning grounds and flora and fauna awaits and welcome all adventurous tourists and naturalist to its secrets

Location

The Bersia Grazing Reserve which has an are of 300 hectares could only be reached by boat from Kg. Bersia which is 15 km from Grik along East West Highway. From the put-in point in Kg. Bersia a 30 minutes leisure boat ride along the dammed-up Perak River will take you to the Grazing Reserve. The Grazing Reserve is situated on the rolling hills on the left bank of the Perak River dammed-up by the Temenggor Dam in the east and the Bersia Dam in the west.

Accommodation Facilities

The Grazing Reserve provides overnight facilities with 4 hostels that can accommodate 40 people at one time. The hostel is constructed of split jungle rollers, weaved bamboo sides and bertam roffing. It is very airy, cooling and spartan with clean toilets and bathroom facilities. A complete package of either 1 night or 2 night stay is offered to visitors.

How to get there

Bus services are available from Kuala Lumpur to Grik. From Grik visitors can proceed to Kg. Bersia where a boat is then needed to go to the Grazing Reserve.

Activities

Farm Activities

Farm activities include feeding of cattle and round up activities in the evening. Visitors can engage themselves with the farmers rounding up and head counting of cattle in the evening as the animals are brought back to the night yard daily.

Fishing

Visitors can either do fishing along the compound or go night fishing with the farmers. However, included is another activity called " laying of the pukat " in the evening and " drawing in the pukat " in the morning. During spawning season, (August - September) visitors will be taken to specific spawning areas to see thousands of fish fighting the current to spawn. (Spawning days lasted for only a day or two after heavy rain during the month of August to September.)

Game Watching

There are several salk licks area within the vicinity of the Grazing Reserve. Visitors can try their luck to wait and see wild animals such as elephants, tapir, seladang, kijang, or pelanduk in their natural habitat around the salt lick.

Jungle trekking

Jungle trekking through the rain forest is an experience for the adventurous visitors. Experienced guide will take visitors through the jungle to an enchanting stream of clean clear water.

Orang Asli

There are two Orang Asli villages, 20 minutes boat ride from the Grazing Reserve. Visitors will be taken to one of this and witness their way of life and farming methods.
