More Adventure In Taman Negara Eco-Challenge 2008
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 20 (Bernama) -- The Taman Negara Eco-Challenge (TNEC) 2008 to be held in Pahang on Nov 5-8 will offer the most gruelling and challenging track in Asia, Pahang Tourism Action Council general manager Idros Yahya said Monday.
"The three-stage event is the most punishing endurance adventure race in Asia," he told Bernama in a telephone interview.
Competing in teams of four, the participants will be flagged off in Tanah Rata, Cameron Highlands, and traverse 150km across the Titiwangsa Range, build their own bamboo rafts and navigate the Jelai River to reach the finishing line in Kuala Medang in Lipis, Pahang.
In keeping with its minimalist concept, the teams are only allowed to bring the barest equipment and rations and will be disqualified if any member fails to complete the course.
Idros said that for the sake of safety and environmental sustainability, participation would be limited to 30 teams.
Twenty teams comprising local and foreign extreme sports enthusiasts and various units of the police and security forces had confirmed their participation, he added.
This third edition of Taman Negara Eco-Challenge is jointly organised by the council and Temerloh Outdoor Sports Management & Services in collaboration with the Tourism Ministry.
The Regent of Pahang, Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, is scheduled to flag off the event, which serves to promote extreme endurance sports in Malaysia as well as to boost Pahang's National Park as an international tourist attraction.
