Vocabulary of the Quran
The entire vocabulary of the Quran is derived from a little more than 1725 root words (most of them triliteral, that is, composed of three letters; some four; a couple five). Arabic, being a Semitic tongue, is highly derivative, that is, a few root words can produce thousands of variations, and often the variations range in meaning. For example, the root word janana produces a club of words and meanings that appear dozens of times in the Quran but that do not tarry very far from the original linguistic meaning of janana, which is to conceal or be hidden or exist beyond perception. From j-n-n (jîm nûn nûn) the following nouns are generated: Janna (paradisal gardens or Heaven, and earthly gardens or sown fields); ajinna (singular janîn) (fetus or unborn child); jinn (those unseen creatures who have volition, the species from which Iblis or Satan hails); majnûn (insanity, one possessed); junna (covering, as when people make false oaths to "cover" their true designs); and a couple of other examples, like the verb jann, as when the night "covered" Abraham and he saw a star. (This usage is found in the amazing story of when God had revealed the unseen governance of the heavens and earth to Abraham, which completely transforms this great Patriarch who then sees the sacred point of all existence in all that he sees.)
A good number of these root words in the Quran are used sparingly. A couple hundred are used less than three times total. Dozens appear only once. The point is this: the main themes and core message of the Quran are carried on the backs of several hundred root words that one can make a steady study of. There are a few standard texts that can help with this but they require some knowledge of Arabic. One must resist the notion that one cannot begin a personal study of the Quran until he or she has mastered Arabic. My argument against this is in its circularity. One can learn Arabic as he or she moves methodically through the root words of the Quran and read how they are used in the Scripture.
Of course, to pass judgment on what certain verses mean, especially if they pertain to sacred law, has very high standards. That’s not what I’m talking about. My message today is: demystify how to approach the Quran and its words, and then follow that up with methodical study, whether alone (as we must acknowledge the probability of, given some of the vulgar realities of life and its pressures) or with a group. Either way, get started.

Mashaallah, I was discussing this, this morning.
This dictionary contains words in the order of their first appearance as one proceeds reading the Quran from the start to the end. The set of root alphabets of a word encountered for the first time while reading the Quran has been picked up to assign appropriate meaning to it. To cite an example, the word اَلرَّحِيْم appears for the first time in chapter No.1. Verse No. (1:2). It is repeated 95 times in the whole Quran and all other derivatives of its root alphabets ر ح م appear many more times, but this set of root alphabets is not dealt with again. There are of course some exceptions, when the same set of root alphabets is used to convey different meanings. This is how the total number of words in this dictionary has been drastically reduced to less than 1800. Some words were missed by oversight, they have neverthless been dealt with later, some other important words like 'Sadaqaat'. Muhammed (PBH) etc were deliberately dealth with later at places where they are permanently mentioned like ch 47. entitled "Muhammed (PBH )Under each set of alphabets, chapter nos. and verse nos. of other important derivatives, words associated with them and their opposite words have been given wherever possible, so as to help the reader in thoroughly understanding the general meaning conveyed through all the derivatives of many of the sets of root alphabets. Words of the Holy Quran have mostly been explained through verses of the Quran, with some exceptions, specially when the words appear only once or few times. If the meaning of the derivative of any particular set of root alphabets is to be found out, one can refer to the alphabetical index, where in all sets of root alphabets encountered for the first time in the Holy Quran are given in alphabetical order.
The dictionary starts with the word ‘Allah’. To get the next word ‘Ar-Rahman’, click on to menu on the top page which displays Chapter and word number scroll down and click 2. To get the subsequent words proceed in the same manner. To get the desire number click beside (In Serial Oder ) u will find a list of word number displayed. It also gives the Root Alphabet in Arabic to view the arabic Root Alphabets click to Arabic Alphabetic Index To the Dictionary of The Holy Quran.
Try to understand and memorize the meanings of the words given under chapter No.1. Read this chapter from the Holy Quran and check, whether or not, you are able to understand the Arabic text without referring to any translation. Proceed this way verse after verse and chapter after chapter. Insha Allah in due course you will be able to understand the Arabic text of the whole Quran.
Nothing is achieved without effort, so pray to Allah (SWT) for His help and proceed to understand His message with the aim of implementing it. May Allah help us in our effort. Ameen. |

CHAPTER - 1
1. Allah 1:1 اَللّه ( ا ل ه )
Abstracts of the Attributes of Allah, taken from two statements of Prophet Muhammed ( SAWS ) are based on the meanings conveyed through the respective root words and their derivatives used in the Holy Quran, the chapter and verse numbers of which are given in brackets.
Allah is the name given in the Holy Quran to the Divine Being Who exists necessarily by Himself, comprising all the Attributes of perfection. Allah is an underived word, it neither has a feminine nor a plural. It has never been used for any deity except the True God. As a proper noun and a name it cannot be translated into any language. The word ‘God’ is the translation of the word ‘Ilaha’ which is not a personal name but the name of a status meaning, ‘The Supreme Authority in the Universe’, just like president, chairman, king etc. There is only one ‘Ilaha’ and that is Allah. In the Holy Quran nothing is mentioned about His constitution, size or shape. He is beyond human imagination. We are required to recognize and call Him only through His name and Attributes ( 7:180 ) which also serve as His Functions. He is separate and different from His creation ( 58:7 ). He does not beget and He is not begotten. He cannot be seen ( 6: 130). He is not only the Creator of the material universe but also the laws governing its birth, existence and end ( 7:54 ). He is the Supreme Authority in the universe having absolute power over everything, everywhere and every moment ( 5:17, 33:38 ). He does what He Wills or intends to ( 3:40, 2:253 ) and no one can question Him for His actions ( 21:23). All the forces are at His Command ( 48:4 ). The whole creation submits to Him ( 13:15, 16:49 ) glorifying Him ( 57:1 ). Everything belongs to Him as part of His kingdom ( 2:255, 3:189 ).
Allah is always alive, conscious and attentive being present everywhere, He does not die, does not sleep, does not become inattentive with regard to His creation and does not get tired managing it ( 2:115, 2:255, 25:58 ). He is Eternally Existing ( 3:2 ), Self Subsisting, established over everything, everywhere. He maintains, conducts and sets right His creation. He is unique, One, Single, having no partners and nothing else is like Him. He is the Indivisible Whole possessing all the Attributes at one and the same time which function with perfect coordination. He is Holy, Pure, having nothing in Him except Himself, free from all defects, evils, short comings etc. He is the Absolute ( 59:23 ). He is Real, True, Right, Correct, Just etc. ( 22:6 ). He is the ‘Ultimate Reality’ and not the product of someone’s conjecture or desire. He is the Light of the skies and the earth and guides to His light whom He wills ( 24:35 ). Light makes everything visible but is itself invisible ( 6:103 ).
His Powers : He is the Owner, Master and the King of the universe ( 1:3, 3:26, 3:189, 23:116, 54:55 ) He is Independent ( 3:97, 35:15, 39:7 ) and everything else is dependent on Him ( 112:2 ). He is the Mighty, the Great, Firm and Strong ( 13:9, 59:23, 2:255, 56:74, 51:58, 22:74 ) Who holds together His creation ( 35:41 ). He measures out, programmes and destines everything in His creation, fixing the time and place of every event ( 54:3, 73:20, 6:96-97, 36:33-39, 41:9-12, 13:8, 77:20-23, 80:19-20, 54:49, 65:3, 25:2, 5:120, 18:45 ). He is Glorious ( 11:73 ), Possessor of Majesty, Honour and Bounty ( 55:27 ), Dominating ( 12:21 ), Who can compel everything to obey His orders ( 59:23 ) being Omnipotent ( 40:16 ) Who can subdue, subjugate over whelm over power, defeat etc. anyone and anything.
His association with space : He is the Evident, the Outer Most, Who is external to everything at the same time He is hidden, the Inner Most, internal with respect to everything ( 57:3 ). He is Omnipresent, Ample Giving Whose Power, Knowledge, Mercy etc. extend over everything ( 2:255, 20:98, 7:156 ). He expands the universe ( 51:47 ) being present everywhere ( 2:115 ). He grants in abundance to whom He wills. He encompasses everything having total knowledge of and total power on everything ( 4:126, 17:60, 65:12 ). He is the Nearest and First to hear us and respond to our prayers ( 2:186, 50:16). He is High and Exalted over everything ( 2:255, 7:190 ).
His association with time : He is the First, there was no one and nothing existing before Him and He will be the Last when everything will perish except Him. He is the One Who remains ( 28:88, 55:26-27, 57:3, 20:73 ). He has fixed the time and place of happening of every affair ( 54:3 ) but He has the power of preponing, postponing or even canceling it ( 13:39 ).
Abu Hurayrah ( RA ), a companion of prophet Muhammed ( SAWS ), reports that the messenger of Allah ( SAWS ) once said, “Allah says Adam’s son ( i.e. man ) annoys Me by abusing time although I am TIME and the affair of alternating the night and the day is in My hand ( which makes us conscious of time ). Collected by Bukhari and Muslim.
His association with His creation : He is the only ‘Ilaha’ i.e. God in the skies and the earth ( 2:163, 43:84, 47:19 ). If there were two or more gods then there would have been total disorder in the whole universe due to their mutual fighting for achieving the ownership and control of the throne of the universe and each god would have taken away things which he had created ( 23:91, 17:42 ). Contrary to this there is perfect order in the creation ( 67:3-4 ). God is He Who creates and destroys, controls everything, is capable of harming and benefiting others ( 7;191-195, 10:18, 16:73-74, 22:73, 46:4-6 ). Can anything other than God do the above things? Therefore nothing from His creation is to be elevated to His position as partner or equal and doing this is an unforgivable sin ( 4:48,116 ). He is the Omniscient, knowing everything whether seen or unseen ( 6:101, 17:25, 22:70, 35:38, 59:22 ) and He is Wise ( 2:209 ). He is the Originator of the material and the energy in His creation, Assigner of Laws for the perfect and peaceful existence of His creation, Proportioner of the raw materials, Purifier as an eliminator of unwanted things and the Fashioner of the final products ( 2:117, 6:79, 30:30, 35:1, 59:24 ) He it is Who begins and gets things reproduced ( 21:104, 10:34 ). He sustains life ( 51:58, 15:20 ) through water ( 45:5 ), food ( 50:9-11 ) etc. bestowing more on some and less on others ( 2:212,245, 13:26 ). He fosters everything ( 6:164 ) in such a manner as to make it attain one condition after another until it reaches its goal of completion, i.e. He cherishes, nourishes, develops and evolves. He is the Lord of the worlds ( 1:1, 11:107, 9:129 ). His ‘Rahmat’ which conveys the sense of benefit, reward, safety out of mercy, good etc. extends over everything ( 7:156 ). He has raised the heavenly bodies without any pillars and He is the Custodian, Controller and Monitor over everything ( 2:255, 4:85, 11:57, 13:2 ). He has the power to bring together all human beings on the day of resurrection ( 3:9, 77:38 ) and also the whole universe, ending it in the ‘Big Crunch’ ( 75:9, 21:104, 39:67 ). He grants in abundance to whom He pleases ( 13:26 ). He is capable of finding, that is, nothing can be hidden from Him ( 38:44, 93:6 ). He computes, calculates and preserves the record of everything ( 36:12, 72:28 ). He inherits everything, that is, everything will go back to Him ( 57:10 ). He is ‘The Praised’. Everything, everywhere always praises and thanks Him but we do not understand their praise and glorification ( 17:44 ).
His association with mankind : Real guidance is only Allah’s guidance ( 2:120 ). He guides whom He wills to the right way (14:4 ). He creates everything, sets up equilibrium in it, programmes it and then guides it to follow the programme ( 87:1-3 ). He is the Author of peace, ( 59:23 ), Perfect, Sound, Defectless, Safe, Source of rising high, Dictator of the ‘Religion of Peace i.e. Al – Islam’, before Whom everything submits as a Muslim ( 3:83 ). He is the Granter of security, peace, safety. He is Reliable and Trustworthy, in Whose existence we are required to believe. This belief or ‘Iman’ is an internal condition and ‘Islam’ is its expression. He is the Guardian Who prevails providing protection, exhibiting love and mercy ( 59:23 ). He is the Subtle, Who is informed of the internally hidden conditions of everything. His Grace, Kindness, Beneficence, Mercy etc. continuously work behind the scene without our noticing them immediately, we notice the result only after some time ( 6:103, 42:19, 67:13-14 ). Water is continuously evaporating without our notice to form clouds, we notice only the final effect as rain and vegetation. He is Clement, full of leniency, kindness, tolerance, forbearance, giving time for amendment though He has the power to punish us immediately for the sins committed by us ( 2:225, 3:155 ). Allah is the God, Strong and perfectly informed, inspite of this, His Authority is denied and others beside Him are worshipped, respected and obeyed. He has he power of retaliation, still He exhibits unmatched patience and restraint. He is ‘The Loving’. His love is associated with His mercy and forgiveness. Love should be reciprocal which requires response from human beings in the form of obeying His orders ( 11:90, 85:14 ). He responds to one who prays to Him ( 2:186, 11:61 ). His grant is not restricted to those who pray to Him, He even grants to those who are unfit to receive it ( 14:39 ). He sometimes grants as a reward. He grants to whom He wills ( 3:8, 42: 49 ). He is ‘The Helper’ ( 2:107 ) and when He helps no one can stop His help ( 3:13,160 ). He obliges human beings by guiding them towards right belief ( 49:17 ). He is ‘The Trustee’ Who is Reliable, Dependable and Incharge of everything ( 6:102 ). We are required to put our total trust in Him and He loves such people ( 3:159, 65:3 ). He is the our Patron and Friend towards Whom we are required to turn for help ( 2:107 ). He is Kind, Benign Who exhibits His fidelity and response ( 52:28 ). He is full of pity for others ( 9:117 ) saving His servants from harmful things which hinder their growth. His help should be sought ( 1:4, 21:112 ) and only He can benefit. He has the charge and maintains everything ( 16:91 ). He is sufficient as Guardian ( 4:45 ), Helper, Trustee, Guide, ( 4:81, 25:31 ) as one Who knows (4:70 ) as One Informed ( 17:17 ), Seeing, Witnessing ( 4:79 ) and as One Who takes account ( 4:6 ). He is constantly and intensely Gracious ( 19:47 ). He elevates righteous deeds ( 35:10 ). He can forbid, prevent, harm and disgrace anyone. He sees ( 17:1 ), hears ( 2:127), is informed ( 2:234 ), is a witness ( 22: 17 ) and Vigilant ( 33:52 ) over everything. He will raise the dead ( 22:7) to take an account of everything ( 4:86 ). He manifests the truth, He is the best Judge executing justice ( 95:8, 34:26 ). He acknowledges ( 2:158 ) our striving in His cause. He accepts repentance ( 4:16-18, 9:104 ), He pardons and He can protect us from committing sins and also the punishment of sins already committed ( 6:165, 39:53 ). He inflicts retribution ( 3:4 ) and is Severe in requiting evil ( 2:196 ).
Allah, exhibiting all His Attributes, gives life, causes to die ( 40:68 ), shapes us and gives us complexions as He wills ( 3:6, 35:28, 30:22 ). He gives us physical senses ( 16:78 ) knowledge ( 2:255, 96:4-5 ), wisdom ( 2:269 ), language and speech ( 30:22, 55: 2-4, 90:8-9 ). It is He Who gives us happiness and sorrow ( 53:43 ) and restores us to health ( 26:80 ). He grants us mates ( 30:21 ), children ( male or female ), progeny ( 16:72, 42:49-50. 23:79 ) and relatives ( 25:54 ). He grants us sleep for rest ( 25:47, 78:9 ) and provides us with food ( 11:6, 15:20-21, 27:64 ), clothes ( 16:81 ). Houses ( 16:80 ), roads ( 20:53 ) and means of transport ( 17:70, 36:41-42, 40:79 ). He sanctifies ( 4:49, 24:21 ) and grants higher or lower status to whom He wills ( 3:26, 12:76, 43:32 ). He has subjected everything in the universe to serve us ( 31:20 ) and made us collectively responsible to implement His laws (2 :30-39, 6:165 ) for the peaceful existence of mankind. All this He has done to TEST us, so as to mark out the dwellers of paradise and hell ( 11:7, 67:2, 76:2 ) and to help us in achieving success in this test He has been extremely fair in providing us with guidance in the form of Divine revelations communicated through His messengers ( PBT ) who were sent to all communities, ( 16:36, 35:24, 40:78 ) the final form of which is the Holy Quran ( 5:48 ) and the last Messenger Muhammed ( SAWS ) ( 33:40 ). |

What is a root?
If you speak a European language, the root system of Arabic may be an unfamiliar concept. Arabic words are made from a few component letters, commonly called a "root". A root usually consists of three letters (sometimes 2 or 4), which convey a basic idea. By adding various vowels (i.e. changing pronunciation) as affixes*, associated meanings can be derived. For example, the Arabic letters: Siin–Lam–Miim (see above: س ل م and remember Arabic words go from right to left, unlike English) are the root for the following words: salaam (peace), islam (submission/compliance/conformance/surrender), muslim (one who submits/complies/conforms/surrenders). In all these words, you will see the root (component letters) are the same, and in the same order, i.e. Siin-Lam-Miim.
*A word element, such as a prefix (insertion before the word), infix (insertion within the word) or suffix (insertion after the word), that is attached to a base, stem, or root.
In a root language, words mean what they mean because they are built from other words; these base words are called roots. Now, while most languages are concept languages, there are some words that can be likened to the root system, e.g: if you learn what the word "act" means, you should have no problem when you hear the word "actor" or "action" - you use the root to understand the word built from the root.
Classical Arabic as one of the most primitive Semitic languages is primarily a root language. Almost every word gets its meaning from the roots it is built from rather than by associating a concept with the word. This gives Arabic an almost crystal clear aspect to it; there is little ambiguity or confusion in a classical Arabic sentence. The language is one of clarity, directness, and certainty - qualities that are hard to achieve in other languages. |

Aim: To list ALL the roots used in Al Quran, including possible meanings (from SEVERAL Classical Arabic dictionaries/lexicons), give ALL examples of usage (allowing cross-reference) and detailed grammar information for EVERY word used. Its goal is to be the most comprehensive Quran study tool in the English language.
Why? When one reads a translation of Al Quran, they are actually reading the translator's interpretation of the original Arabic. Thus, mistakes are to be expected. A translation will have the translator's own thoughts/experiences/education/bias/imperfections. By listing the possible meanings of the roots with all of their occurrences & comments on grammar, we allow you to study the meanings and usage for yourself. We hope this project will aid the study of students of the scripture.

Which root is being used?
If you can read and understand Arabic you should have little problem in identifying the root (i.e. component letters) of an Arabic word. However, if you are a complete beginner and you dont understand Arabic at all, it still shouldn't be too difficult. With a little practice, it becomes fairly easy.
The following is a description of a simple and easy to use 'root identification method'. Lets say you are reading an English translation of The Reading (al quran) and you wish to get a better (i.e. more accurate) understanding of a word or concept, what can you do?
1) First of all, note the chapter (sura) and verse (ayat) number. I will use an example, which will be 17:36 (i.e. chapter 17, verse 36). I could have chosen any verse from any chapter to demonstrate this method.
And follow not that of which you have not the knowledge; surely the hearing and the sight and the heart, all of these, shall be questioned about that. [17:36, Shakir's translation, you can use any one]
2) Go to a transliteration website. Transliteration is simply a fancy word for pronounciation, i.e. an English equivalent of what the Arabic sounds like when said out loud. The following is the transliteration website I use:

Once there, click on the relevant chapter (17) and find the relevant verse (36). In this case, you will find the following transliteration:
Wala taqfu ma laysa laka bihi AAilmun inna alssamAAa waalbasara waalfu-ada kullu ola-ika kana AAanhu mas-oolan.
3) So lets say you wish to find out what The Reading says about the "heart" (or more accurately, the Arabic word the translator has decided means "heart"), how can we identify the Arabic word used? By knowing the English equivalents of common words, we can home in on the word we are interested in. To view a list of commonly occurring words in The Reading, click on the following link:

I will now place the English translation and transliteration side by side for comparison, highlighting the commonly occuring words (ignore the brackets when identifying words):

As you can see after "surely" (inna) the first "the" (al) is attached to "hearing" so the Arabic word for "hearing" is likely to be "ssamAAa" (which is correct), then the Arabic says "waal" which is simply "and the" and this is attached to "basara" which is likely to mean "sight" (which is correct) and the last "waal" (and the) is attached to "fu-ada" so this is likely to be the word we are looking for (heart), which is correct.
So to home in on the correct word for that verse, we only had to learn three common Arabic terms: "wa" (and), "al" (the), "inna" (surely). One should not need to know more than 20 common Arabic terms to identify the words they wish to research further. If you dont want to memorise them, simply have them as a list by your computer. It couldn't be easier.
4) To make sure you have the right word, type the word (fuada) into a phonetic search engine, like the one below:

And look to see if the word "heart" turns up in the verses returned in the search. In this case, it has, so this tells us we are very likely to have the correct word. If the word doesn't turn up, repeat steps 3-4 carefully.
5) Now we have the word "fuada", we need to determine what is the root of "fuada". In other words, what are the Arabic letters that make up the word "fuada"? To do this say "fuada" out loud and try to work out the main sounds (i.e. syllables) of the word. A tip is to try and pronounce each vowel as well. So, in this case it would be: fu-a-da. The root of "fuada" happens to be: Faa-Alif-Dal (see Arabic letters above).
In a situation where you have two similar sounds/letters, just try both (e.g. Dal & Daad, Ha & H!aa, Siin & Saad, Taa & Tay, Th!aa & Thal, Zay & Za), in a process of elimination. "AA" in a transliteration usually means the Arabic letter Ayn, not Alif.
6) Once you have some root possibilities, click on the first letter of the root, see if its listed. Keep trying all the possibilities until you find it. If you cant find it, repeat the process again. If you still cant find it, feel free to ask on the following forum. It does get easier with practice.
Alternatively, buy a word for word Quran, which separates each Arabic word giving the English meaning next to it. This allows you to see the component letters (i.e. root) of every word, without you having to do any work apart from knowing the Arabic alphabet (which is shown above anyway). Google: 'noble quran word for word' to find an appropriate store (~$60 US / £30 Sterling).

Which root meaning is correct?
To approach Al-Quran with pre-conceived beliefs is not an objective approach. It is difficult to eliminate one's pre-conceived beliefs, but to truly see what Al-Quran is saying, it must be done.
ALL occurrences of the root and their contexts must be examined.
Specific derivatives of a root may have to be separated and analysed.
Crucial or relevant words within these verses should be checked to make sure they have been used accurately.
Before understanding a specific word/concept, it must be checked that this word/concept is consistent, logical and does not interfere with another part of the message.
Other verses discussing the same or similar subject must be checked.
Don't draw something out that is not there. When you have to embellish on a word to make it mean what you think it means, most chances are it doesn't mean that. The connection should be clear. Get solid evidence to demonstrate that a word may not mean what many think it to mean.
After this thorough investigation, you may find that several meanings are possible/acceptable for an occurrence. Even if 2 or 3 meanings remain, if there is no reason to disregard them, we should not, but rather conclude that what must be meant is both the 2 or all three (or however more there may be) or better yet, choose the meaning that includes, and does not cancel out, all other possible meanings. A more accurate understanding of a word/concept should gradually develop as one's study increases/improves.
Make your view known! Present your research/findings to other students of the scripture. Quite often, questions may be raised that you have not thought of, thus helping you to refine your understanding. Not only does this help you, it also helps others because you may have thought of something others haven't.
