Cygnus Milky Way

The summer constellation of Cygnus contains some of the Milky Way's most impressive
nebulae.  Most, however, are extremely challenging to see through a telescope.  They do
show up well on photographs, though.  The brightest nebula in Cygnus, the North America
Nebula, is at the upper left in this photo.  It's name derives from its rather striking resemblance
to the North American continent.  The small patch of nebulosity just off the "East Coast" of the
North America Nebula is the Pelican Nebula.  The North America Nebula is visible from dark
locations as a brighter patch of Milky Way.  The shape is distinct through small, wide-angle
telescopes, especially when using a nebula filter to enhance the view.  The big mess of red
hydrogen gas to the right and lower-right of the North America Nebula is called the
Gamma Cygni nebula complex, after the brightest star involved in the nebulosity.  This
nebula is much more difficult to see.  Another challenge in Cygnus is the Veil Nebula.
This is visible at the lower left corner of the photograph as two small red arcs.  The fainter
arc on the right runs through the fairly bright star 52 Cygni.  The Veil Nebula is the remnant
of a supernova explosion.  Also, at the very bottom center of the picture is the open star cluster,
NGC 6940.

Photographed June 5, 2000, from the Chiricahua Mountains, AZ.

Al-An'am (The Cattle)

6:97 And He it is who has set up for you the stars
so that you might be guided by them
in the midst of the deep darkness of land and sea:
clearly, indeed,
have We spelled out these messages unto people of [innate] knowledge!

Al-A'raf (The Heights)

7:54 VERILY, your Sustainer is God,
who has created the heavens and the earth in six aeons,
and is established on the throne of His almightiness. [43]
He covers the day with the night in swift pursuit,
with the sun and the moon and the stars subservient to His command:
oh, verily, His is all creation and all command.

Hallowed is God, the Sustainer of all the worlds!

An-Nahl (The Bee)

16:12 And He has made the night and the day
and the sun and the moon subservient [to His laws,
so that they be of use] to you; [9] and all the stars
are subservient to His command:
in this, behold, there are messages indeed for people who use their reason!
