Partij voor de Vrijheid (PVV) - Dutch MP Geert Wilders
Stop This Provocation Of Anti-Quran Film
News agencies have reported that no sooner had controversial MP Geert Wilders, the leader of the far-right Freedom Party, announced a plan to produce a film about the Qur'an, than the government moved to avoid its possible fallout. "I hope that it will open peoples eyes to the fact that the Qur'an should be banned like (Adolf Hitler's book) Mein Kampf," Wilders told ANP news agency on Wednesday, November 28. He said the film will support his view that the Qur'an is "a horrible and fascist book" that inspires people to commit "awful acts"."I will make the film and see what reaction it creates."
.
The far-right lawmaker is known for his anti-Islam stance. In August, he described the Muslim holy book as a "fascist" text which exhorts followers to kill and rape, comparing it to Mein Kampf, which outlines Hitler's racist ideology. In an open letter to Dutch newspapers, Wilders called for banning the Qur'an from the Netherlands. He has also campaigned to ban the building of new mosques in the European country and halt all Muslim immigration. His anti-Islam campaign has helped his far-right party win nine seats in last year's parliamentary elections.
Wilders' film plans sparked immediate concerns.Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen met with the far-right lawmaker to discuss the issue."After Wilders announced he was making an anti-Islam film minister Verhagen met with him to point out the risks in making such a movie for himself and his entourage, and for the Netherlands and the Dutch interests abroad," spokesman Bart Rijs told AFP.The planned film is reminiscent of the two-part "Submission" by controversial Somali-born Ayaan Hirsi about Islam's alleged oppression of women. The documentary, blasted as "extremely insulting" by Dutch Muslims, led to the November 2004 killing of its director Theo Van Gogh.Justice Minister Hirsch Ballin said all parties must show respect for all religions and for what is sacred to others."We owe respect to each other."
The minister stressed that if this boundary is overstepped, the government will oppose the film.
We are appalled at this new development in Netherlands. A section of politicians, media men and bigoted writers have deliberately started a campaign against the Quran and the Prophet of Islam. We do not see if such provocation serves any purpose other than creating social tension.A section of the West , instead of looking into the root cause that such provocations should not be allowed by law ask Muslims to learn tolerance. The license to do everything in the name of freedom has generated all these problem. This worship of unrestricted freedom is an obsession of a broad section of the western mind which is the cause of spread of so much of vulgarity, nudity, sexualisation of every form of entertainment, pornography and prostitution, thereby destroying moral fibre of humanity.
We also agree that there should not be over-reaction on the part of the Muslims and small issues should be ignored , particularly when no evil intention is apparent. We however feel that a law is needed in every country to stop such incitement and provocation. Democracy and freedom can not mean license or incitement to social turmoil and hampering peace. We hope all would understand this.

[IslamicNewsUpdates] Islam and Muslims in Holland: Don't Boycott Dutch Products: Muslims
Don't Boycott Dutch Products: Muslims
By Nasreddine Djebbi , IOL Correspondent
Wed. Sep. 5, 2007

THE HAGUE — Dutch Muslims are approaching religious
and political authorities in different Muslim
countries to persuade them against boycotting their
country's products in protest against anti-Quran
remarks by a rightist lawmaker.
"A boycott will hurt Muslims who are part of the Dutch
society," the Dutch Muslim Council said in a message
to the Egyptian People's Assembly (lower house of
parliament), a copy of which was obtained by
IslamOnline.net.
"The boycott won't serve Islam. Instead, it will give
ammunition for hardliners to smear our faith."
A number of Egyptian MPs have called for boycotting
Dutch products and lowering diplomatic ties with the
Netherlands after MP Geert Wilders, the leader of the
far right Freedom Party, called for banning the Noble
Qur'an in the European country.
Dutch Muslims, who make up one million of the
Netherlands' 16 million population, do not think this
is the right response.
"This boycott will play into the hands of this
isolated MP (Wilders) who is chasing limelight and
votes," the council's chairman Idris El-Boujoufi told
IOL.
A copy of the statement has been sent to the speaker
of the parliament, the chairman of its foreign
relations committee, the Grand Mufti of Egypt and
Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, the highest seat of religions
learning in the Sunni world.
Dutch Muslims have been under scrutiny since the
killing of Dutch filmmaker Theo Van Gogh by a Muslim
after a controversial anti-Islam documentary.
Following the murder, which was immediately and
vehemently condemned by Dutch Muslims, the Netherland
has adopted a flurry of Europe's toughest entry and
integration laws.
Collective Punishment
The Muslim council said the boycott will amount to a
collective punishment of the Dutch people.
"We will be punishing an entire people for something
they have not done, especially that the Dutch are
known for their tolerance and good ties with Muslims."
Muslim worldwide boycotted in 2006 Danish products
over the publication of several cartoons lampooning
Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing be upon him).
The campaign caused Danish companies nearly $1.5
million a day in losses.
Denmark's leading dairy company Arla Foods, one of the
hardest hit, issued at the time a strong condemnation
of the cartoon and appealed to Arabs and Muslims to
end their boycott of its products.
El-Boujoufi said Dutch Muslims do not want that to
happen to Dutch companies.
"We always complain of being punished for the work of
a few radical Muslims. How could we make the same
mistake?"
The Muslim council urged religious and political
parties in Egypt and elsewhere to "consult with Dutch
Muslims before taking any move that could complicate
the situation."
The Dutch government has slammed Wilder's remarks as
damaging for community relations and an insult to
Muslims in the Netherlands and abroad.
It denied any plans to even consider his proposal now
or in the future. |

obmar,
I am a strong proponent of free speech, regardless of the message being given. If you stop someone from voicing their opinion, no matter how bigotted or crazy it may seem, you merely give fodder to the proponents of that opinion to say, "See, we ARE right. Why else would they ban us if we weren't right." That adds a whole other dimension to the equation.
It is always better to allow one to speak their mind and then question their conclusions. Let the racists speak and by their own words they will betray themselves. Given the light of day, bigotry almost always loses. But kept in the dark, it can sway people who are weak-minded and easily believe anything put before them.
The best place for bigotry is out in the open for all the world to see. When the movie comes out I'm sure that it will be very easily dissected, critiqued and decimated. Keep it in the dark, and it will be shown in backroom parlors and clandestine meetings with the idea that it can't be shown in the open for fear that "the truth" would create problems for "the bad guys."
"They don't want you to see this film. They're afraid that if you learn the truth, you'll rise up against them."
In the light of day and before God and mankind, they can't play that game. |
