Animation revenue to hit RM1b
JOHOR BARU: The turnover for the local animation and cartoon industry is expected to reach RM1bil this year.
Deputy Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Kong Cho Ha said the industry gained RM600mil in revenue last year after many of the products made it into the global market.
He said the high quality and low production cost has allowed the Malaysian-made animations to penetrate overseas market, especially China.
About 200 local animation companies have gone global.
"Malaysia is a small market. These companies must go global to succeed," Kong said after opening the MCA's ICT Resource Centre (MIRC) SMB ICT Roadshow here yesterday.
He said the country was forming an alliance with China, which was looking to outsource production to Malaysia.
"Some Chinese companies have come to see what we can do for them. Compared to Hong Kong, South Korea and Japan, the cost here is cheaper," he said.
Kong said MIRC's mission was to link small and medium enterprises (SME) with information and communications technology (ICT) that would help improve and generate business.
"We want to help the mall and medium enterprises to adopt information technology. Their survival depends on how far they adopt the technologies," Kong said.
