Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) has launched the Tasik Chini Research Centre (TCRC) to study the lake’s water quality, ecohydrology and ecology.
The foundation stone placement ceremony for TCRC was officiated by Deputy Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Hj Abdul Razak on 19 January, 2008 at Tasik Chini, Pekan, Pahang. Also present were Dato’ Sri Adnan Haji Yaakob and UKM’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Sharifah Hapsah Syed Hasan Shahabudin.
Assoc. Prof. Datin Dr. Mushrifah Idris has been appointed the Coordinator and the research facility will be managed by UKM’s Faculty of Science and Technology which initiated the project. The Government of Pahang has provided 10 acres of land for the development of the complex. Research will also be carried out in the fields of environmental engineering, microbiology, social sciences, economics and physical sciences.
The collaborative effort between UKM and the Government of Pahang is in accordance with the Pahang State Structure Plan (2001-2020) and Pekan District Local Plan (2002-2015) for the preservation of Lake Chini as an environmentally sensitive area.
Lake Chini is the second largest natural freshwater lake in the state of Pahang covering 202 hectares. Research shows that the lake is able to accommodate the diversity of various flora and fauna, including the 51 species of low woodland vegetation, 15 species of freshwater plants, 25 species of aquatic plants and 87 species of freshwater fish. For the designated purposes, TCRC may necessitate a sum of RM 30 million to realize its development for the next 5-10 years.
TCRC Complex will be equipped with research infrastructure and integrated utilities to enhance the research. It will house a laboratory, a management office, an auditorium, a museum and a dormitory accommodation. The surrounding areas are going to be used as an arboretum and nature trails. |
