A JAPANESE-German joint venture to manufacture high-grade industrial plastics hopes to strengthen its position in the region with the opening of a US$40 million (RM146 million) plant in Pahang.

The polybutylene terephalate (PBT) plant at the Gebeng Industrial Area near Kuantan was launched by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob.

Toray BASF PBT Resin Sdn Bhd (TBPR) is a 50-50 joint venture between BASF Aktiengesellschaft of Germany and Toray Industries Inc of Japan.

"The establishment of TBPR reflects our strong commitment to Malaysia, which has provided us with favourable incentives, distinguished work forces and excellent infrastructure," Toray senior managing director Chiaki Tanaka said.

"Here in Malaysia, we made a great step forward to become a leading engineering plastic manufacturer in Asia, where we expect continued rapid market growth for the coming years," he added.

Dr Martin Brudermueller, a member of BASF's board of executive directors in charge of Asia operations, said the tie-up with Toray was conceptualised in 2001 to further strengthen the company's presence in the region.

"For BASF, our partnership with Toray provides a strategic technological advantage. The plant, for instance, is operated using the most advanced polymerisation technology from Toray," he said.

Capable of producing 60,000 tonnes of PBT annually, the plant came onstream in April 2006. It has 50 employees.

PBT is a thermoplastic polyester that has high rigidity, superior weathering and heat resistance, and dimensional stability. Additional features include good electrical insulating properties and resistance to chemicals.

Typical applications are in electrical components (such as connectors, micro-switches and condenser cases), automotive parts (electronic-control unit cases, exterior door handles and headlight frames), precision equipment, construction materials and household appliances.

Toray has operations in Penang, while BASF has facilities in Pahang, Terengganu, Johor, Perak, Kedah and the Klang Valley.

"This plant will supply PBT resins to our existing compounding plants in Malaysia, South Korea and a new plant coming up in Shanghai.

"With this powerful production network, we strengthen our position in Asia Pacific to serve our customers even better," Brudermueller added.
