I'm not against the idea of naming an object as one desires, but I do respect the feelings of others. These organizations that stand behind freedom of speech to name their teddy bear "Muhammed' are okay .......................... if they don't mind naming the next one "Jesus.," and the one after that, "Jehovah" I don't have a problem with free speech as long as its universal. I do have a problem when one group, any group, espouses free speech when they offend other groups, but refuse free speech when their group is offended. That goes for any group. Here is one discussion that discusses it theoretically: http://donsingleton.blogspot.com/2007/12/teddy-bear-named-jesus.html They skirt the main issues, and I'm surprised at Whoopie's comments, but they do bring the topic to the fore and that's a good thing. It is entirely true that in the English speaking community the name "Jesus" is rarely, if ever, given. By the same token, the name "Jesus" (hey-zeus), is very common in Spanish speaking communities. This is directly related to the reverence of the name in the English (and French, and others as well I believe). I agree that it was wrong for the state to get involved based on what I know of the situation, but I don't think we know much about the events here in the West. For example: Is there a state law prohibiting the use of Muhammed in anything public or commercial?? In other words, are they looking at this as a form of trivializing the name, such as making products like Muhammed Toothpaste, Muhammed Mouth Wash, Muhammed Tire Rims, etc. I'm faily certain that this isn't the first time in the entire history of mankind that someone in a predominantly Islamic country and in a public or very noticeable way decided to give the name of Muhammed to an item of some kind. What happened in those instances? What other circumstances surround this current case that are not being told in the West? On the surface it is easy to cast judgment and blame. I just think that we need all the facts before we make such a decision. |

To me it does not matter if they want to name it Muhammad.
After all Muhammad is the most common Muslim name. Next to that could be Abdullah, or slave of Allah. But dont blame obmar if the children starts asking and learning about Islam. |

Wouldn't hurt if we also had Harris' help. You should also post, if you know of any history on the positive influences of being a Muslim and Islamic... Very difficult to rebuke anything they say on Islamic and Muslim history since I don't know it. Sorry about that... Also why we could use Harris' help... |

Did he flag me to it... How can he call me a Sufi when I don't even know what one is yet??? That shouldn't surprise me keeping company with a Muslim and posting some of your material on Liberty Forum. I quess I should be greatful. I've been called everything but a white girl on these forums. I've been called some pretty horrible bad stuff. My favorite was "Pathetic F**king Jew Loving C*nt B*tch". That's the worst I've readand my favorite. After a while you just get used to it. Doesn't bother me that much any more. If they're doing it to me, saying horrible nasty hateful things to me, at least they're leaving someone else alone for the time being. That's how I try to look at it. I'd rather them take their hateful miserable selves out on me than someone else. It can get to you... Also, why I like your forum so much... Gives me a break from it, every now and then. |

They already are being taught English, by a British teacher via Government sponsorship. If they were afraid of Western way of life they wouldn't be teaching English to their children. The Communist Chinese did not teach English, to their children, during the Maoist period... Colonialism has left deep scares in most of Africa. During colonial times it was illegal to speak Arabic in French occupied Algeria. Yet Algerian troops fought to liberate France from Nazi occupation. After that liberation of France the french turned around and imposed harsher tactics on Algerian desire for freedom from French occupation... Sudan has it's own bloody history with Britian. It was the British that crushed a Sufi revolt lead by Al Mahdi against the British after Sudanese troops helped fight German Nazis in Egypt. The Sudanese too wanted freedom and end of foregn occuptaion, oddly enough the Brits did not consider themselves foreigners in Africa... Everything has a historical context to it. Especially in former colonies. One needs to understand the historical context, those free speech advocates would be exactly how willing to defend some toy manufacturer who decides to name a black bear Sambo... In Germany it is consider unacceptable to name your child Adolf. Would a German toy maker have freedom of speech advocates falling over themselves to defend the company if it named a bear Adolf Hitler... With that said... I'm sure no one would mind a stuffed pig being named Jesus... White Anglo-Saxxon Protestants do not have the reputation of worldwide ambassadors that they believe they do... Currently attacking Muslims is easier to do cause they are more than likely to defend their culture and religion, thus creating sensationalism... |

If you have alot of anything that is "simple" to start out, to help me understand, I suggest you start posting lots of it. I'm beginning to believe I can could start using it about now...
