Students make beeline for seminars

Students make beeline for seminars
18 Sep 2006

PEKAN: Permodalan Nasional Bhd’s public outreach programme "Together with PNB" has turned out to be a big hit with schoolchildren.

The four-day event, launched on Saturday, saw groups of students making a beeline for the Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Convention Centre where a series of seminars, discussions and an exhibition on investment and financial planning are being held.

The programme aims to raise community awareness on investment opportunities offered by PNB and its subsidiaries.

Over 100 students from SMK Bandar Tun Razak, SMK Desa Jaya and SMK Beserah have taken part in the seminars. Fun activities such as word games, puzzles and quiz programmes on finance and investment have also been held.

The schools are among eight member schools of PNB’s Smart Investment Club given exclusive privilege to participate in the programme.

The other schools are SMK Chini, SMK Astana, SMK Paya Besar, SMK Temerloh and SMK Dato Shah Bandar Hussain.

The club was formed six years ago in collaboration with the Education Ministry, as part of PNB’s efforts to reach out to the younger generation and help them be investment-savvy.

Membership is limited to exemplary secondary school students, who are exposed to investment-related education and career options. To date, the club has 101 member schools from across the country.

Exhibitors like Malayan Banking Bhd and Takaful Ikhlas have had many people showing interest in the different savings and investment schemes on offer.

Takaful products, which are similar to insurance schemes, have also attracted many inquiries from senior citizens.

Other exhibitors are the Securities Commission, Amanah Raya Bhd, Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry, UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd, Golden Hope Bhd, Goodyear Malaysia Bhd, Chemical Company of Malaysia Bhd and Dutch Lady Milk Industries Bhd.

PNB has lined up attractive prizes that are being given away daily, including the grand prize of a Modenas motorcycle to be given to the winner of the Smart Investors Quiz.

The country’s most accessed investment arm has a commendable 28-year-old track record. Its accumulated trust fund is valued at RM60 billion, which accounts for 50 per cent of the net asset value of the country’s trust fund industry.

Each year when it holds the Minggu Saham Amanah, shares of its two popular funds, Amanah Saham Wawasan and Amanah Saham Malaysia, are grabbed up by investors within an hour.

At the launch, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said PNB’s efforts had benefited multinational companies, investors and the public.

He said failure was not an option for the agency as how successful its schemes were would be a reflection of public confidence in the government’s management of the economy.
