Students advised to appreciate diversity
Young people in Malaysia need to fully appreciate the country's diverse cultures.
In making this point, Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Ong Tee Keat said the nation was seen by the international community as a good example of a multi-cultural society.
“In the past 50 years, we have been reiterating the significance and relevance of tolerance, which has been one of the major building blocks of racial harmony.
“But it is now time to go one step further by encouraging the younger generation to understand and further appreciate these cultures,” he said, at the Patriotic Carnival at LimKokWing University of Creative Technology on Wednesday.
He said Malaysia had always taken pride in its cultural diversity, so it was time to revisit some of the “virtues” of the country's multi-ethnicity.
Ong added that it was also important for the younger generation to understand and remember their forefather’s struggles for independence.
“They don’t only need to be reminded of this but also need to learn to appreciate history, especially with Malaysia celebrating its 50th independence this year,” he said.
The Patriotic Carnival, held in conjunction with the Merdeka celebrations, saw about 8,000 students from 14 public and private universities coming together to participate in activities and performances.
A patriotic music CD was launched as a follow-up to the launch of the book Mission 2020: The Final Stretch last month by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
The book was also highlighted at the event.
