Single mums get chance to attend college

KUANTAN: Single mothers are to be given the opportunity to improve their skills and knowledge in community colleges run by the Higher Education Ministry.
State Arts, Culture, Heritage, Tourism and Women’s Affairs Committee chairman Datuk Maz-nah Mazlan said she would be meeting the director of the college here soon to discuss related matters on the courses.
Maznah said presently, some single mothers who were members of the Pahang’s Single Mothers Asso-ciation (Mutiara), were attending courses in computer studies and motivation but those were just day-to-day programmes.
“We plan to give them an opportunity to go deeper into courses which interest and suit them.
“Some of them are doing their own businesses such as in tailoring, bakeries and others,” Maznah said after flagging off 93 Kolej Komuniti Kuantan’s students in their “Mer-deka” journey on motorcycles from here to Pekan recently.
Also present was the college’s director Abdullah Hamid.
Maznah said the courses planned for single mothers would be held within six months and the timing of the classes would have to suit their availability.
“This is because they are the sole breadwinners in the family and their working hours have to be taken into consideration.
“They cannot simply leave their work to attend the courses, so we are looking for a win-win situation,” she said.
Meanwhile, Mutiara chairman Lina Muhammad said she welcomed the idea to help single mothers.
Lina said there were some 2,000 single mothers registered as members in the association.
“We are looking at every possible measure to help upgrade the livelihood of single mothers.
“Some of them are doing odd jobs to earn income to support their children and other family members.
“By attending such courses, they could open their own businesses later or may even expand what they are doing now,” she said.
