Putrajaya Perdana 'has global qualities'Putrajaya Perdana 'has global qualities'
August 11 2007
QUESTION: Why is there an interest to invest in Putrajaya Perdana Bhd?
ANSWER: Putrajaya Perdana Bhd (PPB) has the right ingredients to be turned into a global construction company. It has got good people and is clearly ahead of the field in new growth areas like energy-efficient buildings.
It also has a good image in the market - non-controversial but effective.
Q: What value are the new shareholders bringing to PPB?
A: I believe that the new shareholders have strategic strengths which will allow PPB to tap into the construction boom in the Middle East. Some US$200 billion (RM6.96 billion) is going to be spent by Kuwait and the UAE each as part of the development programmes. As such, there will be a demand for construction companies. Not just any construction company, mind you, but good construction companies. We also have the vision, resources and patience to turn Putrajaya Perdana into a brand name.
Q: Is this the beginning of more investments coming in from West Asia?
A: I cannot speak for other investors but I believe that Malaysia presents a good value proposition. It welcomes foreign investors, has good infrastructure and a framework which supports foreign investment. Plus there are several exciting projects here, notably the Iskandar Development Region.
Q: What is the key strength in Malaysia and can this lead to good investments?
A: The key strength is the pro-business policy and the strong economic fundamentals of the country. Whether this will lead to investments depends on a number of factors, including incentives and whether the right assets are available.
Q: Is the consortium planning to invest in more Malaysian companies? Which particular industry would be attractive?
A: The short answer is yes. Our guiding principle is that we must always be vigilant for opportunities and this also applies to Malaysia. But as I mentioned before, we have a plan for Putrajaya Perdana to become a global player and any move that furthers that vision will be considered seriously.
Q: Do you have plans to invest in Malaysia's Iskandar Development Region, and the Northern and Eastern Corridors?
A: The Iskandar Development Region has good potential. It is a long-term project with many possibilities, especially in the construction sector. I believe Putrajaya Perdana could have a role to play in this development. As for the Northern and Eastern Corridors, as the plans crystallise more, I am sure there will be investment opportunities in tourism and infrastructure projects.
