THIS Merdeka month Istana Budaya (Jalan Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur) is leaving no stone unturned in paying tribute to the Father of the Nation Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra.

From Friday to Aug 28, in Panggung Sari, guests can be educated and entertained by Putra The Musical, a star-studded and colourful musical tribute to Bapa Malaysia.

Putra The Musical is directed by Mior Hashim Manap and stars popular television and screen actor Datuk Jalaluddin Hassan, who also hosted the game show Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?

The musical also stars Malaysian Film Festival 2007 Best Actress Vanida Imran of The Red Kebaya and Perempuan Melayu Terakhir fame, and popular actor Zul Huzaimy Marzuki who appeared in Impak Maksima and Remp-It.

Other stars of the show include Mazlan Tahir, Iqbal, Ebby Yus, Yalal Chin and Gersang lead singer Man Bai, who proved his acting talent in films such as Layar Lara and Syukur 21.
The musical charts the life story of Tunku who was born into privilege as the son of Sultan Abdul Hamid Halim Shah of Kedah, but gave up a life of comfort to forge a multi-racial movement —- the Alliance (today’s Barisan Nasional) — that campaigned non-violently for Malaysia’s independence from British colonial rule.

Tunku’s school days in London, his career as a district officer and his election as the second president of the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) in 1951 succeeding the party’s founder Datuk Onn Jaafar, are covered in the play.

It also depicts the independence leader as a family man who was close to his children and wife Tun Sharifah Rodziah Barakbah, as well as his friendship with fellow independence leaders Tun Abdul Razak Hussein, Tun Dr Ismail Abdul Rahman, Tun Tan Cheng Lock, Tun Tan Siew Sin, and Tun V. T. Sambanthan.

Putra The Musical is Jalaluddin’s second Istana Budaya musical this year in which he plays the country’s first Prime Minister.

He had also starred as the Tunku in Muzikal Tan Cheng Lock alongside Kenji Sawahi (Lim Boon Wah) who played the title role of Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) founder president Tan Cheng Lock.

Time: 8.30pm. There are additional 3pm shows on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets: RM10. Call 03-4026-5558.
