Najib on urbanising rural and Felda areas

BENTONG: Bringing urban infrastructure and facilities to rural areas and Felda settlements will help turn them into economic growth centres.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said this would help disperse the population as the strain on urban centres was expected to worsen in the coming years.
"Urban centres such as the Klang Valley are already densely populated. We need to have a strategic intervention plan to tackle this problem instead of letting market forces be the sole determining factor in population migration," he said.
Opening the new Felda Jaya Timur township in Mempaga, near here, yesterday, he said the Government had allocated RM600 million to build 10 other townships in Felda schemes under the Ninth Malaysia Plan.
The Felda township project is part of efforts to turn the settlements into models for the rural urbanisation programme.
They will be fully equipped with facilities such as modern shophouses, sports complexes, efficient public transport and education centres.
Najib said the federal government had also allocated RM180 million to improve water supply to Felda settlements in Pahang.
Felda would also give RM350 to each settler for Hari Raya Puasa.
