KUALA LUMPUR: Brace yourselves for bad weather in the next few weeks. The intermonsoon season — from late September till late October — typically brings heavy rains in the morning and severe afternoon thunderstorms.
During the transition from the southwest to the northeast monsoon, gusting winds during storms are often strong enough to uproot trees and damage roofs.
Such storms are hard to forecast because they are localised, according to Meteorological Department spokesman Wong Teck Kiong.
People should stay indoors and avoid open field activities during thunderstorms, he added. Sunday’s storm in Sepang is an example of such a storm.
Heavy rain caused low visibility. Four Malaysia Airlines flights had to be diverted from KLIA. A flight from London spent five hours on the tarmac at Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang before it could take off.
Wong said despite the storms, the amount of rainfall should remain normal so the threat of landslides is minimal. The Department will issue warnings if the need arises.
According to the Department’s website, the west coast states and inland areas of Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan in Peninsular Malaysia will experience scattered showers and thunderstorms in the late afternoon and evening, often accompanied by heavy rain and strong gusting winds.
