KUALA LUMPUR: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will be in good hands when he undergoes his second coronary bypass today.
The team will be headed by Tan Sri Dr Yahya Awang, the cardiothoracic surgeon responsible for performing the first cardiac coronary bypass on the former prime minister in 1989.

An expert from the US, Professor Dr Hartzell V. Schaff, has also been flown in to be part of the surgical team at the National Heart Institute (IJN).

Dr Schaff has 34 years of experience and practises cardiothoracic surgery and general surgery at the Mayo clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

Dr Mahathir will also be attended to by a panel of doctors headed by IJN medical director, Datuk Seri Dr Robaayah Zambahari.
Dr Mahathir, 81, was admitted to the IJN on Sunday for the elective coronary bypass surgery. Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali was by her husband’s side.

Datuk Paduka Marina Mahathir urged Malaysians to pray for her father.

"We pray that everything will go well. The family would appreciate it if Malaysians could also pray for the success of his surgery."

Marina said her father was fit and healthy but decided that it was the right time to have the bypass.

She stressed that the second coronary bypass was not an emergency procedure.

The IJN said in a statement that doctors had advised Dr Mahathir against having any visitors, except for immediate family members.

Security at the IJN was tighter than usual yesterday to prevent visitors from trying to see Dr Mahathir. A security guard was stationed near the lifts and policemen were guarding his ward.

Although Dr Mahathir is discouraged from having visitors, Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim and Deputy Internal Security Minister Datuk Johari Baharum were at the hospital yesterday.

Rais, who spent more than an hour at the IJN, refused to comment on Dr Mahathir’s condition.

Johari said he didn’t see Dr Mahathir as he was resting but met Dr Mahathir’s family members.

On Jan 24, 1989, Dr Mahathir, who was then 63 years old, underwent a successful coronary bypass operation at the Kuala Lumpur General Hospital.

Dr Mahathir suffered a heart attack on Nov 9 last year and was admitted to the IJN.

The International Herald Tribune newspaper had reported that Dr Mahathir’s doctors had found three blockages in the heart.

On May 14, Dr Mahathir was rushed to the Langkawi Hospital after he complained of breathing difficulties and was transferred to the IJN the following day.

He was discharged 10 days later after recovering from lung congestion linked to a heart attack.

Dr M's bypass surgery a success
By : Marc Lourdes

Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir during an impromptu press conference at the IJN lobby yesterday after her father, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, successfully underwent a coronary bypass surgery.

KUALA LUMPUR: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad successfully underwent his second coronary bypass at the National Heart Institute (IJN) yesterday.

The former prime minister was taken into the operation theatre complex at 8.45am where immediate family members were allowed to see him before he was wheeled into the operating theatre.

The operation began at 9.40am and was completed at 3.05pm. Dr Mahathir was operated on by a six-member team of surgeons led by Tan Sri Dr Yahya Awang.

The team also comprised Mayo Clinic cardiothoracic surgery chief Prof Dr Hartzell Schaff, Datuk Dr Rozali Wathooth, Datuk Dr Azhari Yakub, Datuk Dr Venugopal Balchand and Dr Mohamed Ezani Mohd Taib.

He was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit at 3.30pm, where his condition will be observed over the next few days.

IJN said in a statement that doctors were happy that the procedure had progressed as anticipated and that Dr Mahathir’s vital signs were stable.

The hospital said he would be under close observation by a team of doctors and nurses during the 48-hour period after the operation — a crucial time in the post-operative period.

When met at the hospital, Dr Mahathir’s daughter Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir said the family dealt with the operation much better than they did his first bypass in 1989.

"We were not so tense this time. We were better prepared and knew he was in capable hands.

"When he was in the operating theatre, we spent the time talking, eating and reading magazines," she said.

Marina said the family shed tears of relief when the operation was over. Her mother, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, was in good spirits after the successful operation.

"She is tired but very happy. We want to thank everybody, everywhere, Malaysians of all races and religions, who sent wonderful messages, SMSes and e-mails to us.

"We are sure that was what helped him, and us, through this. God listened to everyone and we are very grateful for all that," said Marina, with tears welling up in her eyes.

While the average Malaysian was not able to show up in person to offer their support to Dr Mahathir, many dignitaries were at the IJN.

The VIPs included Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor and Toh Puan Ena Ling.

Dr Mahathir, 81, was admitted to the IJN on Sunday for the elective procedure.

Attention Now On Second Phase, Says Mukhriz

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 5 (Bernama) -- The attention now was on the second phase (post-surgery) for Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's recovery and the family hoped it would go smoothly and safely, said his son Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir.

Mukhriz, the fifth child of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, 81, who underwent a successful second coronary bypass surgery at the National Heart Institute here Tuesday, said the doctors gave 48 hours for Dr Mahathir to regain consciousness and get past the critical stage.

"This recovery phase is a "lifeline" for dad, because anything can happen during this time. So we need to pray harder and give special care and attention for him to pass this second test.

"The doctors said my father's situation is stable and that his heartbeat and pulse are normal. Tun (dad) can regain consciousness any time, we will keep the media informed of developments from time to time," he told reporters when met at the hospital's lobby Tuesday night.

Mukhriz, 43, also said that his mother Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali was very thankful to all Malaysians for their prayers and well wishes that this surgery would go smoothly.

He said Siti Hasmah was deeply touched by the SMS messages and e-mails of support the family received from Malaysians of all walks of life.

"She was so delighted when I showed her the SMSs and e-mails. Our family is very thankful to everyone for their concern," said Mukhriz, who is also an Umno Youth executive council member and chairman of its International Relations and Non-governmental Organisations Bureau.

He added that the doctors would not allow anyone to visit Dr Mahathir during this period as he needed a lot of rest and had to be monitored closely.
