Koto is one of the traditional music instruments of Japan, made from Paulownia wood, or The Empress Tree, which it is also known as. Its shape is said to resemble that of the dragon and even the names of various parts of the instrument correspond to parts of a dragon’s body. Most Koto have 13 strings stretched lengthwise over bridges and tied at each end of the body. In this concert however, koto with 17 strings will be played. It was about 350 years ago when master Yatsuhashi Kengyo revolutionised the koto, making it an indispensable instrument in Japanese music. Ticket Redemption: Tickets will be issued on the day of the performance. However, Temporary Passes wil be issued, which you can then exchange for tickets, prior to the day of the performance. That's what I had been looking for before you posted it. I love that musical instrument but did not know what it was called.
The ladies in a group called a "Taste of Honey", guitarist Hazel Payne and bassist Janice Johnson, ... Hazel played her "koto" when they performed "Sukiyaki" on "American Bandstand" years ago in my younger days. It is one of my favorites. I love this song. You can hear the "koto" being played here...
