He died trying to save others

Fatal rescue attempt
30 June, 2007

Kota Kinabalu: A 35-year-old man from Kuala Lumpur died trying to save
a mother and her daughter, both foreign tourists, from drowning at
Karambunai, near here, Friday.

Abd Rahman Abdullah, an employee of Petronas Carigali based in Miri,
Sarawak, got into difficulties in the water while attempting to save
the woman and her daughter aged between 20 and 50.

A colleague, Leow Yon Wei, 30, from Cheras in Kuala Lumpur, said they
were among 40 Petronas Carigali employees who went there to attend a
course.

He said after the course ended around 5.30pm, they decided to unwind
at the beach and some, including Abd Rahman and himself, went swimming
in the sea. He said they saw the mother and daughter struggling in the
water and went to help them together with two other colleagues, adding
the sea condition was quite rough then.

When they got near the mother and daughter, they faced difficulties
due to the sea condition, and Abd Rahman was struggling to keep afloat
himself, said Leow, adding a boat took them all to the beach where
they tried to administer CPR on Abd Rahman.

Abd Rahman was then rushed to the Likas Hospital around 6pm but was
pronounced dead on arrival.
The Inquisitor

That's truly sad, obmar.

It happens a lot more often than we suspect, too.
