Bangkok Promotes Cloth Bags To Counter Global Warming
BANGKOK, Sept 4 (Bernama) -- The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will launch a campaign to promote the use of cloth bags instead of plastics, to reduce waste and require no additional energy to get rid of the used plastic bag, according to Bangkok governor Apirak Kosayodhin.
The campaign will be launched on Sept 9, to encourage the public to bring cloth bags to the market, the governor was quoted by the Thailand news agency (TNA) as saying here.
Some 30,000 cloth bags would be distributed to the public at the National Stadium Station of the Bangkok Mass Transit System or BTS Skytrain and other six stations which were connected to department stores, he said.
Plastic bags that shoppers bring home from the supermarket or convenience stores mainly end up in landfill, with only a few being recycled.
Typically made of polyethylene, they can take up to a thousand years to biodegrade in landfills that emit harmful greenhouse gases.
Reducing the contribution to plastic-bag pollution is as simple as using a cloth bag carry-all instead of wasting plastic ones.
Apirak said everyday 8,500 tonnes of garbage were collected in Bangkok, which could cause 11,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide gas that is a factor in global warming.
"Among the garbage collected, 21 per cent or 1,800 tonnes are plastic bags. If we reduce the use of plastic bags, we can cut carbon dioxide bu one million tonnes per year or 2.3 per cent of the carbon dioxide that is emitted in Bangkok," he said.
It would also help reduce the cost of waste disposal by Bt 650 million annually, said the governor.
Meanwhile, he said, the BMA and the environmental movement Greenpeace jointly launched a project called Solar Container to raise public awareness of the dangerous impact of global warming.
Under the project, a mobile unit equipped with a "global warming calculator" would roam throughout the city to help the public calculate how much carbon dioxide they produced each day from daily life activities, and the mobile unit would also promote action the public could do to help stop global warming.
Bangkok's City Hall has been conducting activities designed to promote reducing global warming on the ninth of every month. The first campaign began with much fanfare on May 9.

Excellent story, obmar.
It's just a drop in the bucket, but each drop helps.

Have you done your ecological footprint quiz to know where you stand?

CATEGORY ACRES
FOOD 5.9
MOBILITY 2.7
SHELTER 3
GOODS/SERVICES 4
TOTAL FOOTPRINT 16
IN COMPARISON, THE AVERAGE ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT IN YOUR COUNTRY IS 24 ACRES PER PERSON.
WORLDWIDE, THERE EXIST 4.5 BIOLOGICALLY PRODUCTIVE ACRES PER PERSON.
IF EVERYONE LIVED LIKE YOU, WE WOULD NEED 3.5 PLANETS.
Well, 3.5 isn't that bad I guess compared to 24 acres.

COAL WILL DESTROY US ALL!

A warning from Architecture2030.org….
Think You’re Making a Difference? Think Again!
There are 151 new conventional coal-fired power plants in various stages of development in the US today.
HOME DEPOT
Home Depot is funding the planting of 300,000 trees in cities across the US to help absorb carbon dioxide
(CO2) emissions… The CO2 emissions from only one medium-sized (500 MW) coal-fired power plant,
in just 10 days of operation, will negate this entire effort.

WAL-MART
Wal-Mart is investing a half billion dollars to reduce the energy consumption and CO2 emissions of their
existing buildings by 20% over the next seven years. If every Wal-Mart Supercenter met this target…
The CO2 emissions from only one medium-sized coal-fired power plant, in just one month of
operation each year, would negate this entire effort.

CALIFORNIA
California passed legislation to cut CO2 emissions in new cars by 25% and in SUVs by 18%, starting in 2009.
If every car and SUV sold in California in 2009 met this standard…
The CO2 emissions from only one medium-sized coal-fired power plant, in just eight months of
operation each year, would negate this entire effort.
EVERY HOUSEHOLD
If every household in the US changed a 60-watt incandescent light bulb to a compact fluorescent…
The CO2 emissions from just two medium-sized coal-fired power plants each year would negate this entire effort.

THERE IS A ‘SILVER BULLET’ FOR SOLVING GLOBAL WARMING…
NO MORE COAL!
Without coal, all the positive efforts underway can make a difference.
Over an 11-year period (1973–1983), the US built approx. 30 billion square feet of new
buildings, added approx. 35 million new vehicles and increased real GDP by one trillion
dollars while decreasing its energy consumption and CO2 emissions.
We don’t need coal, we have what we need: efficient design and proven technologies.
Today, buildings use 76% of all the energy produced at coal plants.
By implementing The 2030 Challenge* to reduce building energy use by a minimum of 50%,
we negate the need for new coal plants.

obmar,
One of the comments posted there also linked to an article about this:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/newsnight/4330469.stm
| Quote: | Over the past two decades, China has put economic growth above all else, and with 200 million Chinese still living on less than a dollar a day, relieving poverty remains vital.
Coal offers the way out. Nearly 80% of the country's electricity comes from coal. That's twice the average, worldwide. And for the time being, as the demand for power grows, this means one thing - more emissions of climate-changing gases.
Clear choices
For the Chinese government's advisers the choices are clear.
"My understanding of the Chinese government's point of view and ordinary people's point of view is that you have to prioritise," Pan Juihua, executive director at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, told us.
"When you have many choices you have to consider the constraints, when you have many problems you have to prioritise. When you have poverty you have to tackle poverty first."
We are a country with a lot of coal, very little oil and very little gas. The development of coal is the basis of the development of the country.
"There is no way that we can replace our production of coal or use alternative sources of energy to totally replace it. Because the US and some Western governments don't abide by the Kyoto Protocol, they are not willing to reduce their carbon emissions... we feel very annoyed about that." |
China is going to overtake the US as the leading polluter of coal emissions in the world. And they could really start polluting if they don't start looking for alternative sources. Between China and the US the rest of the world is basically doomed unless something is done.

The chinese element on the things to come...
the other day i was in bed, but could not sleep.
i was thinking if i could get people like you all pay 30usd each
i would initiate a drive to plant a million trees in the next 5 years.
is 30USD too much to get me plant a tree.
At least we then would have done our part.
