I sure hope you don't get inundated with the number of political commercials we get here in the US. And in recent elections, groups of very rich citizens have started buying commercial time to spout political lies against candidates.
For example, when the idea that Bush was going to face Kerry in 2004, most pundits thought Bush didn't stand a chance against Kerry among the military groups of the country. After all, Bush went AWOL for a year during his service in the military. He didn't spend one day in Vietnam. Kerry was on a small boat in the Mekong Delta where he was wounded three times. For his bravery and heroics he receieved the Purple Heart (the country's highest military honor for a soldier) THREE TIMES and a bronze star to boot. It was generally agreed that Kerry would be able to use these credentials to win over the vast majority of the military crowd.
Well guess what. A group of rich citizens formed a committee called, Swift Boat, and attacked Kerry constantly. They brought forth former soldiers who fought alongside Kerry to bad mouth him and his service, minimize his medals, and called him an antiwar Vietnam veteran. When a famous nightly announcer informed the public of Bush's lack of service, he was trounced by the rest of the media, had to give up his job of 40 years as one of the most trusted names in news announcing, and his sources were villified. They didn't say his story was wrong, because it wasn't, but they said that his source didn't have a correct copy of the story.
We all know who won in 2004.
That's how a soldier who has been wounded in combat three times, has earned 3 purple hearts and a bronze star can lose to a reservist who didn't even complete his military obligation. The military voted overwhelmingly for Bush, though now many say that they felt they were lied to. Oh well, as long as the lie works for the time required, it doesn't really matter if it's exposed later.
