He was a true phenomenon when I was growing up and one of the reasons I was passionate for the sport for years thereafter. I remember the match with Boris. There were many of us glued to the radio and reading the newspapers everyday of the match.
Few people know that Fischer was not supposed to play in the championship that year. In order to qualify, one had to have won the US Open Chess Championship the year before. Bobby didn't even play for it that year. In order to give him a chance in the championship. the Open winner and all the other participants in the Open had to decline their invitation first.
btw, he was a fantastic bowler too who boasted a 200-point average.
