LOCAL creative multimedia content worth some RM385 million was snapped up by international firms at an event in Kuala Lumpur this week.
The inaugural MSC Malaysia Creative Multimedia and Content Buyer Fly In (BFI) programme was organised by the Multimedia Development Corp (MDeC).
MDeC chief executive officer Datuk Badlisham Ghazali said the overwhelming response indicates that local creative talent is recognised.
“This is a pleasant surprise and a testimony to our creative talent. This would certainly help spur the local digital content value chain and generate long-term profitable global business opportunities for the local players.”
The local digital content industry was valued at RM400 million last year and is expected to be worth RM1 billion by 2010.
Aside from helping to promote local talent, he said the BFI programme had also managed to attract several potential foreign direct investments (FDIs) from the industry’s movers and shakers into Cyberjaya.
“Several big names are talking to us right now on the possibility of investing in Cyberjaya after attending the BFI programme. They like what we have here in Malaysia,” he told reporters after the closing ceremony of the BFI programme in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
Badlisham said MDeC plans to open up at least five branches of the Malaysia Animation Creative Content Centre (MAC³) nationwide by 2010.
This will be a partnership whereby MDeC will provide the programme content and information while the state will bear the cost of physical infrastr ucture.
Among the states that have expressed interest to participate are Sabah, Pahang, Perak, Terengganu, Johor, Malacca and Penang, and Kuala Lumpur.
