Employer says sorry for abusing Indonesian maid

Employer says sorry for abusing Indonesian maid

Email to friend Print article
KUALA LUMPUR, Tues:

The employer of the maid who tried to escape by climbing down from the 15th floor of a condominium has admitted to abusing the woman and apologised for it.

The employer, a 35-year-old woman, even tried to settle out of court, saying she would pay all the maid’s wages.

However, the Indonesian Embassy, acting on behalf of the maid, has turned down the offer and will take the employer to court.

A spokesman for the embassy said the maid, Ceriyati Dapin, 33, who had earlier been reported as being named Shamelin, would be protected by the embassy.

He said the employer, her husband and a maid agency employee were met by Indonesian Embassy Immigration head Bambang Widodo, Security head Tatang Razak and the Attache for Labour Workers Teguh Cahyono.

"We have taken Ceriyati for a medical check-up. She is badly bruised and has lost 10kg in weight since she arrived in Malaysia," the spokes-man said.

Sentul police chief ACP K. Kumaran said police had recorded a statement from the employer.

Met at the embassy yesterday, Ceriyati claimed she had been punched, strangled and hit with objects by her employer since Jan 19.

"She would even strip me and abuse me in the bathroom if I made a mistake."

She said the woman’s husband, who stayed at the condominium infrequently, was a good man and tried to stop his wife from abusing her, but to no avail.

She said she had been beaten again on the day of her escape, which she claimed she decided on when her employer threatened to kill her if she made another mistake that day.

Home Ministry secretary-general Tan Sri Aseh Che Mat visited Ceriyati at the embassy yesterday. He said he was sad and disappointed that such an incident had occurred.

Aseh also met other alleged victims there who were ab-used or mistreated and had not been paid for months.

Ceriyati tried to climb down from the 15th floor apartment she was locked in, on Saturday. She fashioned a rope by tying pieces of cloth together.

After climbing down several floors, she lost her nerve and clung on to the rope and the facade of the building. Residents who saw her hanging from the rope called firemen, who rescued the bruised maid.

That's sad news. I have heard of similar cases between Mexican maids and Mexican and American employers. In Mexico there is even more abuse of this type than in the US.

Does this happen a lot in Malaysia?? Are there a lot of Indonesian girls who go to Malaysia looking for that kind of work??

safely about a million recorded, an many more not recorded.

Once a while it leaks into the news.

Some of these people are so heartless, that they thought they could do anything and get away with it.

Is there any government oversight committee that could be notified of the problems with the idea to solve them, or at least bring these people into the public spotlight??

Malaysian police arrest boss of Indonesian maid

KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysian police have arrested the boss of an Indonesian maid who knotted pieces of cloth together to flee the 15th-storey condominium where she worked, reports said Wednesday.

The 35-year-old woman is being held while police investigate alleged wrongful confinement and the causing of hurt with a dangerous weapon, K. Kumaran, a district police chief in Kuala Lumpur, was quoted as saying in the New Straits Times.

Ceriyati Dapin, 33, used the makeshift rope to climb down three floors on Saturday before fear stopped her from going further. The fire department rescued her from a ledge of the building, reports said.

The New Straits Times quoted Ceriyati as saying she had been locked in the apartment and decided to flee after being beaten and threatened with death.

Anis Hidayah, from the Jakarta-based advocacy group Migrant Care, called Ceriyati's case, "the tip of the iceberg."

Hidayah said that from January to June this year, 19 Indonesian migrant workers had died in Malaysia, 17 of them women.

Malaysia depends heavily on foreign maids but they enjoy little protection under labour laws. The maids often work long hours under tough conditions to earn about 100 dollars a month.

Need to address issue of abused maids: Malaysian top official

KUALA LUMPUR (The Star\ANN): Following the recent attempt by an Indonesian maid to climb down from a high-rise apartment block to flee from her employer, the Home Ministry will bring the issue of abused maids to the Cabinet.

Ministry secretary-general Aseh Che Mat said the issues of abused and unpaid maids needed to be addressed and handled properly as Malaysia has a special relationship with Indonesia.

"This issue may affect that," Aseh told reporters during a visit to the Indonesian Embassy here yesterday.

On June 16, a 33-year-old maid used pieces of clothing items to make a rope to climb down from a 16th floor condominium unit in Sentul.

The woman, who claimed that her employer had physically abused her and only gave her bread to eat, was found clinging to the line after she reportedly froze with fear at the 12th floor. (**)
