Cheney admits to authorizing waterboarding

Cheney makes it official: Waterboarding is in

http://www.smirkingchimp.com/thread/2212

In his Washington Post column today, Dan Froomkin flagged a Dick Cheney interview in which Cheney appeared to acknowledge and endorse US use of the technique known as waterboarding.

Q Would you agree a dunk in water is a no-brainer if it can save lives?

THE VICE PRESIDENT: It's a no-brainer for me, but for a while there, I was criticized as being the Vice President "for torture." We don't torture. That's not what we're involved in. We live up to our obligations in international treaties that we're party to and so forth. But the fact is, you can have a fairly robust interrogation program without torture, and we need to be able to do that.

And thanks to the leadership of the President now, and the action of the Congress, we have that authority, and we are able to continue to program.

Most human rights organizations regard waterboarding as torture, and the Bush administration have consistently refused to confirm or deny the use of it in US interrogations. Now, Cheney appears to have explicitly acknowledged and endorsed its use, and even identified Khalid Sheik Mohammed as one individual subjected to the practice.

Last week when the president signed the Military Commissions Act of 2006, Tony Snow told reporters there would be no signing statement asserting the president's right to ignore sections of the law because, in Snow's words, the administration "pretty much" got what they wanted in the bill. Cheney's comments make clear that they think waterboarding isn't prohibited under the law and that they have and will continue to employ it.

Surprise, surprise!

It is hard for me to even watch him on television -
Cheney is so very, very scary....

I read once that he thought of himself as a 'teddy bear"!?!

well only if you recognize that Grizzlies are brown bears....
The Inquisitor

Yeah,

He’s scary alright. I can’t fathom how people can still believe his every word.

Shocked

Every word? I have trouble believing anyone can believe even the simplest statement from him.

Blue,

I have seen some websites that have literally blown me away. They cherish every video of every church service that prayed for Cheney after he shot his friend. Not one mention of the victim, however. I even know an entire forum that is practically dedicated to the preservation of Cheney and all his cronies.

But ya know something. I believe in the afterlife, and the fact that karma has a way of being cashed out. Cheney makes Ebeneezer Scrouge's friend Marley look like a saint. He will pay for eternity the evil he has wrought here on Earth. And Bush is right behind.

How do they live with it, Toeg?
Look in the mirror, their daughters's eyes?
Don't they have nightmares of what they authorized done to others?
Don't they worry about the 'karma' - judgement time?
Or even just having to look at what they've wrought at the end of their lives?
The Inquisitor

Blue,

They are brainwashed, completely brainwashed.

They seek only the dark side, because that is what has reached out to them. I have many cousins who are of this ilk, unfortunately.

The surroundings gives "colour" to the child...

Sad if the colour means hating others...

It surely is - but many are taught hate at home... (sigh)
The Inquisitor

Indeed,

Hate often starts in the home. That is very unfortunate.

And it's at home that we need to stop it. When it comes from home it is often deeply ingrained, and believe me it shows itself at very young (elementary school) ages. (I have seen it myself in kindergartener and first and second graders!)
